A Juminhyo (住民票) is your official residence certificate in Japan. Whether you’re moving to a new address, opening a bank account, or applying for health insurance, you’ll need this document. Here’s how to get one quickly and easily.

A Juminhyo is a government-issued document that records your residential details. It’s managed by your local city office and is required for many official procedures, including:

  • Changing your address
  • Enrolling in Japan’s National Health Insurance
  • Registering for the pension system
  • Applying for social benefits (e.g., childcare allowance, welfare support)
  • Verifying your address for rental agreements, immigration, or legal matters

Your Juminhyo contains important personal information:

  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • Gender
  • Current address
  • Health insurance and pension details (if applicable)
  • Resident Record Code (11-digit number)

For foreign residents, it also includes:

  • Nationality
  • Date of residency in Japan
  • Visa status and expiration date
  • Residence card number

There are three ways to obtain your Juminhyo: in person, at a convenience store, or by mail.

1. Get a Juminhyo in Person (Best for Newcomers)

If you’re new to Japan, this is the easiest method.
