Japan Digital Nomad Visa 2026: Complete Guide to Requirements, Application and What to Expect

Japan Digital Nomad Visa 2026

Japan has long been one of the most desired places on earth to live and work. In March 2024, the country finally opened a dedicated pathway for remote workers: the Digital Nomad Visa. Now in its second year of operation, the visa is well-established — and for high-earning remote workers from eligible countries, it offers a legal, structured way to spend up to 6 months experiencing Japan without sacrificing your income or career.

This guide covers everything about Japan’s Digital Nomad Visa in 2026: who qualifies, what income is required, how to apply, what you can and cannot do while there, and the key practical realities that English-language summaries often miss.

What Is the Japan Digital Nomad Visa?

Officially classified as a Designated Activities visa (tokutei katsudo — Notice No. 53), the Digital Nomad Visa is for individuals employed by a foreign corporation or operating as a foreign self-employed contractor who wish to stay in Japan while working remotely. Unlike a standard tourist visa (maximum 90 days, no work permitted), the Digital Nomad Visa explicitly allows remote work and grants a 6-month stay.

The visa does not issue a Residence Card (Zairyu Card). This has practical consequences: without a residence card, opening a local bank account, signing a standard 2-year mobile phone contract, or accessing certain government services can be difficult or impossible. Most Digital Nomad Visa holders are treated, in effect, as “super-tourists with work rights.”

Eligibility Requirements

Requirement Details
Nationality Citizen of a country with both a tax treaty with Japan AND visa-exempt entry. 50+ countries qualify as of 2026 including US, UK, Canada, Australia, NZ, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan.
Income ¥10 million JPY (~$65,000–$68,000 USD) annual gross income from a non-Japanese source. Proven by tax returns, bank statements, or employment contract with income amounts.
Health Insurance Private international health insurance covering death, injury, and illness with a minimum ¥10M JPY in medical coverage. Digital Nomad Visa holders are not eligible for Japan’s National Health Insurance.
Employer Location Must work for an employer or clients based outside Japan. Working for Japanese companies or earning income from Japanese entities is prohibited on this visa.
Passport Validity Valid for the full duration of the intended stay, with at least 1.5 blank pages.

How to Apply: Step by Step

Step 1 — Gather your documents: You will need a completed visa application form with passport photo, valid passport, proof of income (tax returns, bank statements, or employment contract showing amounts), a certificate or letter from your employer confirming remote work outside Japan, private health insurance certificate, and if applicable, birth and marriage certificates for accompanying family members.

Step 2 — Certificate of Eligibility (optional but faster): You can apply for a COE from the Immigration Bureau of Japan before leaving your home country. Applications with a COE are processed in approximately 5 business days. Without a COE, processing time is longer and varies. The COE is not mandatory for the Digital Nomad Visa, unlike standard work visas.

Step 3 — Apply at a Japanese Embassy or Consulate: Submit your documents to the Japanese Embassy or Consulate with jurisdiction over your area of residence. Many locations now accept online applications through the e-visa system. Do not submit while already in Japan on a tourist visa — apply from your home country.

Step 4 — Enter Japan: Upon arrival at a Japanese airport or port, you are granted the Designated Activities (Digital Nomad) status. The visa is single entry and valid for 3 months from the date of issue — you must enter within that window.

Tax Situation on the Digital Nomad Visa

This is one of the most frequently misunderstood aspects of the visa. In most cases, if your income comes from overseas sources and your total stay in Japan is under 1 year, you are considered a non-resident for Japanese tax purposes. This means you are generally not subject to Japanese income tax or the approximately 10% local inhabitant tax.

Japan’s 10% consumption tax (shohi-zei) applies to your daily spending — dining, shopping, accommodation — regardless of visa status. You may still be eligible for tourist tax-free shopping at participating stores before you establish residency, though the rules change in November 2026 (refund at airport, not at point of sale).

You remain liable for taxes in your home country depending on your country’s tax rules. Consult a tax professional before relying on any assumption about your specific situation.

Practical Realities: What People Miss

No residence card means limited banking access: You will not receive a Zairyu Card, which is typically required to open a standard Japanese bank account or sign a mobile phone contract. Plan your banking, SIM, and accommodation needs before arriving. Short-term rentals (Airbnb, monthly apartments) work best for accommodation.

The income requirement is high: Japan’s ¥10 million income bar is considerably steeper than most other digital nomad visa programs. Portugal’s D8 visa requires roughly €3,280/month ($43,000/year). Japan’s requirement of ~$68,000/year filters for high-earning professionals, particularly in tech, finance, and consulting.

Japan is now cheaper for dollar earners: Despite the income requirement, the yen’s depreciation makes Japan significantly more affordable in real terms. Compared to 2019, dollar earners in Japan get approximately 30–40% more purchasing power for the same income. Tokyo, which regularly ranks among the world’s most livable cities, is now competitive in cost with major US cities.

Family can come: Spouses and children of Digital Nomad Visa holders can accompany under the corresponding Designated Activities visa (Notice No. 54), provided they also hold valid private medical insurance at the required coverage level.
