Best Hotels in Japan — 25+ Personally Tested & Reviewed Stays

  • Planning a trip to Japan? Choosing the right hotel can make or break your experience — especially in a country where location, transport access, and room size vary dramatically between properties.
  • This guide covers 25+ hotels I have personally stayed in across Japan — Tokyo, Osaka, Okinawa, Hiroshima, Hokkaido, Hakone, Kanazawa and beyond. Every hotel on this list was tested for comfort, value, location, and the kind of detail that only shows up when you actually stay there.

Whether you’re visiting Japan for the first time, planning a family holiday, a romantic trip, or a solo adventure — this guide helps you skip the guesswork and book with confidence. All hotels include direct links to check prices and availability instantly on Agoda and Klook.

About your guide: My name is Peter Chen. I’m the founder of Tokyo International Friends & Events (TIFE) — Tokyo’s largest expat community with 35,000+ members. I’ve lived in Tokyo for years and personally traveled across Japan, staying in the hotels on this list as part of my ongoing hotel review series.

I started this list because my community members kept asking me: ‘Which hotel should I stay at in Tokyo?’ I got tired of recommending random options I hadn’t tried. Every hotel here is one I have personally stayed in, paid for (or been hosted), and tested honestly.

What this guide is NOT: a copy-paste from booking sites, AI-generated content, or sponsored rankings. These are real stays, real opinions.

  • ✅ Personally experienced — not copied from booking sites
  • ✅ Honest pros & cons from a frequent traveler
  • ✅ Hotels chosen for location, convenience, and comfort
  • ✅ Perfect for first-time visitors, business travelers, and frequent Japan travelers
  • ✅ Direct links to check prices and availability instantly

In short: This guide helps you choose the right hotel for your travel style without wasting hours comparing random listings.

Each hotel below includes:

  • 📍 Why I stayed there
  • 👤 Who it’s best for
  • ✨ What stood out
  • 🚆 Location & access tips
  • 🔗 A direct link to check prices or book

  • 🚆 Choose hotels near major stations to save travel time
  • 🧳 Japanese rooms are smaller — location matters more than size
  • 📅 Prices change fast — booking early usually saves money
  • 🛏 Business hotels in Japan are often better than expected

Hotels can make or break your trip — especially in Japan.

This list is updated based on real stays and real experience, so you can book with confidence instead of guessing.

  • 🚆 Always choose a hotel near a major train station. Tokyo especially — location saves you 30–60 minutes of travel every day. Walking distance to a JR or Metro station is non-negotiable.
  • 📐 Japanese rooms are smaller than Western standards. A ‘standard double’ in Japan is often equivalent to a Western single. Don’t judge by square meters — judge by layout and location.
  • 🛁 Onsen (hot spring baths) are a highlight of staying in Japan. Many hotels outside central Tokyo have shared or private onsen — try to stay at one at least once.
  • 📅 Book early for peak seasons. Cherry blossom (late March–April), Golden Week (late April–May), and autumn foliage (October–November) see prices spike dramatically. 2–3 months advance booking is recommended.
  • 💴 Price range guide: Budget = under ¥8,000/night · Mid-range = ¥8,000–¥20,000 · Premium = ¥20,000+ · Luxury = ¥40,000+
  • 📲 Agoda and Klook often have different prices and promotions for the same hotel — check both before booking.

🌐 Most major hotels in Japan have English-speaking staff and English signage. You don’t need to speak Japanese.
