I spent less than a restaurant meal last weekend. And I accidentally created my son’s favorite game of the month.
No expensive amusement park. No overpriced toy store. Just an inflatable surfboard and a rope I ordered on Temu Japan, my electric bicycle, and a Tokyo park after the rain.
Watching him surf across the grass laughing his head off? That was worth more than anything I’ve ever bought him.
What You Need (We Got Everything From Temu Japan)
The whole setup cost under ¥5,500 — and with Temu new user coupons, the rope came out to essentially free. Here’s exactly what we used:
- 🛹 Inflatable SUP surfboard — soft, stable, and perfect for grass sliding (doubles as a real water board!)
- 🪢 Reflective rope/leash — strong, lightweight, 4.5m–15m options on Temu
- 🚲 Electric bicycle — for smooth, controlled speed
- ⛑️ Safety gear — helmet, goggles, life vest, cycling gloves (all from Temu!)
- 🌿 A flat grassy Tokyo park after the rain — wet clover grass = perfect sliding surface
I got all the gear from Temu Japan — free shipping, fast delivery, incredible prices.

How We Set It Up — Step by Step
This is genuinely so simple it felt almost too easy:
- Find a Tokyo park with a flat open grass area — right after rain is ideal (wet clover grass is perfectly slippery).
- Inflate the SUP board on the grass — takes about 10 minutes with a pump.
- Attach the rope from the board’s leash point to the back of your bicycle.
- Gear up your child — helmet, goggles, life vest, and gloves. No shortcuts on safety.
- Have them kneel or sit on the board first, not stand — much easier for beginners.
- Start slow. 5–8 km/h is plenty. They will feel like they’re flying.
- Film everything, because nobody will believe you.
⚠️ Safety note: Keep speeds very low. Stay on soft flat grass. Full protective gear is non-negotiable. The inflatable board is great because it’s soft on impact — much safer than a rigid board for grass use.
He Looked Like a Little Pro

Rei didn’t say much at first. He looked at the board. Looked at me. Looked at the bike.
Then he climbed on.
First pull — he wobbled but held on. Second pull — he screamed. Not from fear. From pure joy. By the fifth run, he was leaning into the momentum like he’d done it a hundred times.
He asked to go back every single day that week.
Why This Beats Any Tokyo Amusement Park
A single family trip to a Tokyo theme park can cost ¥15,000–¥30,000 once you add train fare, entrance fees, food, and merchandise. We spent ¥5,500 total and created memories that cost nothing to repeat.
The secret? Temu Japan — I’ve been using it for outdoor and family activity gear, and the value is unreal. The inflatable SUP board alone sells for ¥9,364+ elsewhere. On Temu, ¥5,500. With new user coupons, even less.

The Real Lesson for Parents in Tokyo
Japan can feel expensive when you’re raising a family — especially as an expat in Tokyo. But the best memories don’t come from expensive places.
They come from a Tuesday afternoon in a Tokyo park. A wet clover field. A ¥3,643 inflatable board from Temu. A kid in a tiny life vest adjusting his goggles like he’s about to race.
Kids don’t always remember what you buy them. They remember how you made them feel.

Frequently Asked Questions
What surfboard did you use for grass surfing in Tokyo?
An inflatable SUP paddleboard from Temu Japan — teal and blue, approximately 105×60×15cm, portable and soft. Price: ¥3,643 (was ¥9,364, 17% OFF). Get it on Temu Japan →
How much does DIY grass surfing cost with a Temu surfboard?
Around ¥3,643 for the inflatable SUP board, plus ¥791 for the reflective rope — or free with Temu new user credits. Total under ¥5,000, and both items can also be used for real water activities.
What safety gear do kids need for grass surfing?
A helmet, goggles, life vest, and cycling gloves at minimum — all available on Temu Japan at low prices. Keep speeds below 8 km/h and always have an adult spotter nearby. The inflatable board adds extra safety because it’s soft on impact.
Where in Tokyo can you do grass surfing with kids?
Any park with a large flat grass area works. We used a park in Tokyo’s Koto Ward (江東区). After light rain is ideal — wet clover grass becomes slippery enough to slide smoothly. Yoyogi Park, Komazawa Olympic Park, Mizumoto Park, and Showa Kinen Park are also great options.
Is Temu Japan reliable for shipping outdoor gear?
Yes — most items ship via Yamato Transport or KSB courier. Standard items arrive in 3–8 business days. Inflatable or large items may take 10–15 business days via sea shipping. Free shipping on most orders, plus ¥600 credit if your delivery is delayed.
