Ikenotaira Hotel & Shirakaba Resort Review 2026: Japan's Best Family Resort for Kids

If you’re looking for one resort in Japan where your kids will be entertained from morning to night — without you driving a single kilometer — Shirakaba Resort Ikenotaira Hotel in Nagano is it. I visited at the end of June 2026 with my son, and in this guide I’ll tell you everything: how to get there from Tokyo, how long to stay, what the Super Pass covers (and what it doesn’t), and why I think this is Japan’s best family resort.

Why Ikenotaira Hotel Is Japan’s Best Family Resort

Ikenotaira Hotel sits right on the shore of Lake Shirakaba, 1,400 meters above sea level in Tateshina, Nagano. The air is cool even in summer, and — this is the key part — Ikenotaira Family Land amusement park is directly next to the hotel. You walk out the door and your kids are already at the rides. No car, no train transfers, no stress.

The resort has everything: onsen, a zoo, a museum, a lift up the mountain, lake activities, BBQ, golf, a little train, an indoor pool, an indoor play zone, a video game area, a theme park, and a cycling course. Which leads to my first tip: stay at least 2 nights. The park is huge — covering everything takes more than one full day, especially with a kid setting the pace.

Getting There: Direct Bus from Shinjuku (3 Hours)

This is the part that surprises most families: you don’t need a car. We took the direct highway bus from Shinjuku Station, which takes about 3 hours and drops you at the resort. It makes 2 stops at expressway service areas each way — perfect for toilet breaks, snacks, and browsing souvenirs. Reikun treated the service areas as part of the adventure.

If you’re basing yourself in Shinjuku, this bus makes the trip ridiculously easy: board in Shinjuku, get off at the resort. That’s it.

The Super Pass: The Key to the Whole Trip

The Super Pass: The Key to the Whole Trip

My most important tip: get the Super Pass. It’s Family Land’s unlimited-ride pass — it saves you a lot of time (no ticket lines for every ride) and covers almost every facility. Does it pay off? Reikun rode the go-kart more than 10 times. Ten. Plus. Times. Paying per ride, I’d still be recovering financially.

Here’s everything we used with the Super Pass:

  • Wakuwaku Area — Adventure Canoe, the Wakuwaku Animal Kingdom (a small zoo), and Poly Land, a Nordic-style athletic course
  • Forest Amusement Park — putter golf, the Kurukuru Tower, merry-go-round, the Norokko train, the Shirakaba Wood Coaster, Hippo’s Donguri House, Pota-kun’s bouncy Fluffy Land, the go-karts (Adventure Cart), swan boats, and the forest railway
  • Indoor Park — Digital Lab and the forest athletic course, perfect backup for a rainy day
  • Lakeside Garden — the lift up the mountain

The catch nobody tells you: the Super Pass does NOT cover the indoor pool or the lake activities. We paid extra to rent bikes and the aqua cycle. Not expensive, but budget for it so there are no surprises.

The Lift: The Best View of Lake Shirakaba

Yes, it’s worth going up. The view over Lake Shirakaba and the Tateshina highlands from the lift is beautiful — one of our favorite moments of the trip, even for a kid whose brain was 90% go-karts. At the end of June the weather was just great: clear, cool, and without the summer crowds.

Cycling Around Lake Shirakaba (Don’t Skip This)

Even though it costs extra, renting bikes and riding around Lake Shirakaba is a must with kids. It takes about 20–30 minutes at a relaxed family pace, the route is flat, and the scenery is stunning. Just me and Reikun, the lake, and mountain air you simply don’t get in Tokyo. One of my favorite memories of the whole trip.

The Buffet: Fresh Nigiri, Soba, Kids’ Corner & Baby Food

Dinner and breakfast were both excellent. The buffet hall is huge and spacious with an enormous selection — I loved the variety, and Reikun went straight for the fresh nigiri sushi, the soba (Nagano’s specialty), and the kids’ buffet — a section at kid height where children pick whatever they want themselves. And a huge detail for families with infants: they serve baby food. If you’re coming with a baby, it’s not a problem at all.

Final Verdict: Is Ikenotaira Hotel Worth It for Families?

Yes — and it’s not close. An amusement park next to the hotel, a Super Pass that covers almost everything, a lift with incredible views, cycling around the lake, and a buffet that actually thinks about children (baby food included). Three hours on a direct bus from Shinjuku, and your kids are on a go-kart. Reikun is already asking when we’re going back — and honestly, so am I.

Quick FAQ

How do you get to Shirakaba Resort from Tokyo without a car?

Take the direct highway bus from Shinjuku Station — about 3 hours with 2 rest stops, arriving right at the resort.
※Only operates during weekdays

Is the Super Pass worth it at Ikenotaira Family Land?

Absolutely — it covers almost every attraction (go-karts, zoo, wood coaster, lift, and more) and saves you ticket lines. Just remember: the indoor pool and lake activities cost extra.

How many nights should we stay?

At least 2 nights. The park is so big that one day isn’t enough — especially with small kids.

Is the resort suitable for babies and toddlers?

Yes. The buffet provides baby food and a kids’ section, and the whole resort is designed around families with small children.

What’s the best season to visit?

I went at the end of June — the weather was just great: cool, green, and uncrowded. Summer is the peak family season, and the area turns into a snow resort in winter.
