We are visiting Ginzan Onsen & joining the Jimendashi Festival by Shinkansen. Staying at a traditional Japanese onsen (indoor/outdoor) hotel will full Japanese dinner & breakfast!

■【Highlights】

►Ginzan Onsen Town:

Get in some onsen time, enjoy some magical scenery that inspired one of Japanese most famous animations, have some fun with great people, all why supporting the Tohoku region of Japan.

Ginzan Onsen “Silver Mountain Hot Spring” is a secluded hot spring town nestled in the mountains of Yamagata Prefecture and known as one of Japan’s prettiest onsen towns. It is a wonderland of both traditional Japanese architecture and hot springs with historic ryokan lining the river. It is also the setting that inspired Studio Ghibli’s Hayao Miyazaki animation Spirited Away, with the bathhouse appearing in the film. IMPORTANT: You do NOT have to onsen there. Most people walk around the town soaking in the atmosphere.

►”The Jimendashi Kyoso is held in February. This is a competition in which competitors single-mindedly dig up snow with a shovel to see how fast they reach the earth.” It is a very unique festival to participate in and experience. Very few, even the Japanese people, don’t know about it. It may also be one of the few times you get to participate in a World Cup!

❖ IMPORTANT: We have 7 members currently. We can take up to 20.

– spectators are also welcome. No experience is needed.

►Hijiori Onsen Town:

Hidden deep within the mountains, Hijiori Onsen is a secluded hot spring town. The therapeutic waters promise relaxation and rejuvenation far from the stresses of academic life. Tattoos are OK at the hotel onsen.

►Snow shoes walking with traditional Japanese snowshoes from Hijiori Onsen through the larch forest near the Okura mine and exploring the area and looking for animal footprint.

►JR Tohoku Wide Pass

5 days of unlimited travel on JR trains, buses, and Shinkansen (inc seat reservations.) You can travel before or after the festival weekend. Friday is also a public holiday. Full details are provided on registration. (for non Japanese passport holders)

• 07:00pm JIMENDASHI Party
• 08:30pm JIMENDASHI Party finish

• 10:00am Solympics in Okurayama Schanze
• 11:00am Ground competition starts
