Nobody Talks About the Hard Part of Moving to Japan.

You’ve done the research. The visa paperwork. The ward office registration. The bank account that took three visits to open. The garbage sorting system that somehow has 12 categories.

You prepared for all of that.

But nobody warned you about the silence.

The Sunday afternoons that stretch too long. The feeling that everyone around you is friendly, but no one really knows you yet. The moments when Japan feels exciting and isolating at the same time.

That feeling is real. It’s more common than you think. And it doesn’t have to last long.

🌏 TIFE Was Built for Exactly This Moment.

Since 2015, TIFE has been the first community thousands of newcomers joined when they moved to Tokyo. Not because we advertised it that way — but because it works. Real events. Real people. Real friendships, built fast.

🗓️ Week 1

You show up to your first event — a language exchange, a casual meetup, or an international party. You’re nervous. Within 20 minutes, you’re talking to someone who moved here 6 months ago and knows exactly how you feel.

📅 Month 1

You’ve been to 3 or 4 events. You’re starting to recognize faces. You have people to text about weekend plans. Tokyo starts feeling like home instead of a foreign city.

🌟 Month 3+

You have a real social life in Tokyo. Friends from multiple countries. You know the city better than most tourists ever will. And you’re the one telling new arrivals about TIFE.

🤝 Who You’ll Meet at TIFE

TIFE is Tokyo’s most diverse international community — 69+ nationalities, 35,000+ members. Here’s who’s already waiting to meet you.

🇯🇵 Japanese Locals

Japanese people who want to meet internationals, practice languages, and share their culture. Your window into authentic Japanese life — and often, your most memorable friendships in Japan.

📅 Long-Term Expats

People who’ve lived in Japan for years. They know every shortcut, every hidden restaurant, every bureaucratic workaround. Invaluable when you’re still figuring things out in your first months.

🌐 Global Professionals

Entrepreneurs, engineers, teachers, creatives, healthcare workers — from every background and career. TIFE is where Tokyo’s international professional network actually lives, not on LinkedIn.

❓ Moving to Japan — Common Questions

I don’t speak Japanese yet. Will I fit in?

Yes, completely. Most TIFE events are conducted in English, and many members don’t speak Japanese when they first join. Language exchange events are specifically designed to help you learn naturally — by talking with Japanese speakers who want to practice English. You’ll be learning Japanese while making friends at the same time.

When should I join — before I arrive in Japan or after?

The moment you land — or even before. The sooner you join, the faster your network grows. Many members join in their first week in Tokyo. You can also join our LINE community and Facebook group before you arrive to start feeling connected before you even land.

I’m introverted. Will I still enjoy TIFE events?

TIFE has many introverted members. Our events are structured — language exchanges have a format, cooking parties have a task, sports events have an activity. This gives introverts a natural way to connect without needing to “work the room.” Many of TIFE’s most loyal, long-term members describe themselves as introverted.

Is there a membership fee?

No. Joining TIFE is free. Create an account on Meetup.com, join the group, and RSVP on any event — zero cost. Some events have a small venue or activity fee (¥500–¥2,000), always listed clearly in advance. There are optional premium tiers that unlock extra benefits, but these are never required to participate in community events.

What kind of people join TIFE?

People from 69+ countries, across every profession, primarily in their 20s–40s. Tech workers, English teachers, entrepreneurs, artists, students, corporate relocations, digital nomads, healthcare workers, finance professionals. The one thing everyone shares: they chose to live internationally and want to build real connections in Tokyo.

I’m moving to Tokyo but don’t arrive for a few months. What can I do now?

Join our LINE community and Facebook group now. Ask questions, read posts from current members, and get a feel for Tokyo life before you arrive. When you land, you’ll feel like you already know people.

I’m moving with my family / partner. Is TIFE still relevant?

Yes. TIFE has many members who moved with partners or families. Partners often join events together. While most events skew social rather than family-oriented, the connections you make through TIFE often extend beyond events — members regularly organize casual dinners, day trips, and gatherings that include families and partners.
