🛥️ Mermaid 11 — the luxury bay cruiser (up to 12)
The Mermaid 11 is a 41-foot (11.8m) Steber luxury cruiser built for Tokyo Bay — think of it as a floating private lounge. It carries up to 12 guests (including the captain) and comes with an air-conditioned indoor cabin, sofa lounge, a galley kitchen, two bedrooms below deck, a clean shared toilet and shower, a 37-inch TV, and even karaoke. There’s a spacious rear deck for BBQ and photos, plus an upper deck to feel the breeze and take in the view. This is the boat we chartered for our party, and it’s the one to pick for celebrations and sunset-to-night bay cruises.
⛵ Little Mermaid 8 — the nimble canal explorer (up to 8)
The Little Mermaid 8 (Yamaha Aero Gear 21) is a smaller, more agile boat for up to 8 people and a more budget-friendly price. Because it’s compact, it can slip under Tokyo’s low bridges and explore the rivers and canals — perfect for cherry-blossom season, when sakura arch over the water on both sides. It’s also great for casual outings, easy fireworks viewing and fishing.
What you’ll see on the water
The Mermaid 11’s classic bay course departs the Shinkiba / Yumenoshima pier and cruises past the Tokyo Gate Bridge (the “dinosaur bridge”), the waters off Tokyo Disneyland, Odaiba, the towers of Toyosu and Harumi, and right up to Rainbow Bridge — passing beneath it for a view you simply can’t get from land — before turning back. On request you can extend toward Hamarikyu or the waters off Haneda. Time it for sunset and you’ll ride the bay as the skyline lights up, and in summer you can watch fireworks from your own private deck.
Prefer rivers to open water? The Little Mermaid 8’s canal course heads up the Sumida River toward the Tokyo Skytree, threads through the Kanda and Nihonbashi rivers under the expressway, passes the Arakawa Lock Gate “water elevator,” and drifts beneath the famous sakura tunnels of the Onagi and Ohyoko canals in spring.
