Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world, and it’s finally easy to try in Tokyo. You don’t need a club membership, a partner or your own paddle. This page explains what pickleball is, how the TIFE night works, what it costs and how to get there.

What is pickleball?

Pickleball (ピックルボール) is a paddle sport that mixes elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis. It’s played on a badminton-sized court with a solid paddle and a light plastic ball with holes, usually as doubles.

Easy to learnSmall court, light paddle

Underhand serves and slower rallies mean beginners are playing real games within minutes.

SocialMostly doubles

Four people on a court, constant rotation, lots of laughing between points.

Good workoutThree hours of movement

Short sprints, quick reactions and plenty of steps without the strain of full-court tennis.

Pickleball rules for beginners

You only need five rules to start:

  • Serve underhand and diagonally to the opposite service box.
  • Two-bounce rule: the return of serve and the next shot must each bounce once before anyone volleys.
  • The “kitchen”: you can’t volley (hit the ball in the air) while standing in the zone right next to the net.
  • Games go to 11 points and you must win by 2.
  • Points are scored by the serving side in traditional scoring.

That’s it. The rest you’ll pick up by playing a few games.

Your pickleball night, step by step

  1. 6:30 pm: arrive at Nishimachi International School. Tell the TIFE host it’s your first time and grab a paddle.
  2. Warm up. Loosen up and hit a few easy balls to get a feel for the paddle.
  3. Play and rotate. Players are mixed and rotated through games, so you play with and against lots of different people.
  4. Take breaks whenever you like. Water, chat, and swap LINE with the people you just played with.
  5. 9:30 pm: finish. Group photo, and plans for the next session.
