There’s the Tokyo in the guidebooks.
And then there’s the Tokyo that only locals know.
The izakaya down the back alley that’s not on TripAdvisor. The conversation that lasts until 3am with strangers from 12 different countries. The local festival you’d never have found alone. The group of people who are complete strangers at 8pm and close friends by midnight.
That’s not in any guidebook. That’s TIFE.

❓ Traveler FAQ
I’m only in Tokyo for a few days — can I still join?
Yes. With 50+ events every month, there’s almost always something happening the night you’re free — even if you’re only here for a weekend. Many TIFE events run every week, so your timing rarely matters. Just RSVP on Meetup and show up.
Do I need to speak Japanese?
Not at all. English is the main language at most TIFE events, and the whole point of language exchange events is to learn together. You’ll fit right in from day one.
Is it safe to go alone?
Completely. The majority of TIFE attendees — both travelers and expats — arrive solo. Events are hosted in public venues across Tokyo and are specifically designed for solo attendees to meet people. TIFE has been running since 2015 with 35,000+ members and has a strong culture of being welcoming and inclusive.
How much does it cost?
RSVP is always free. Some events have a small venue or activity fee (usually ¥500–¥2,000), which is clearly listed in the event description. There is no membership fee required to attend events as a guest.
What’s the vibe like? Is it awkward?
Not at all. TIFE events are warm, relaxed, and built for newcomers. The community has a welcoming culture — people are there specifically to meet others, so the usual social awkwardness doesn’t really exist. Most people say they felt comfortable within minutes.
How do I RSVP?
Create a free account on Meetup.com, find the TIFE group, and RSVP on any upcoming event. That’s it. No approval required. Full guide here →
