How can tourists meet Japanese people in Tokyo?
Go to an event that Japanese locals attend on purpose, such as a language exchange. At TIFE’s Wednesday English–Japanese exchange, about 40% of participants are Japanese, and the host seats newcomers with a group. No Japanese is needed; many locals come to practise English.
I’m only in Tokyo for a few days. Can I still join?
Yes. With 50+ events a month there’s usually something on during your stay, even for a weekend trip. Check the upcoming events, RSVP on Meetup and show up. No membership needed.
Do I need to speak Japanese?
No. Many TIFE events run mainly in English, and language exchanges are designed for people who don’t speak Japanese yet.
Is it OK to go alone as a tourist?
Yes. Most people at TIFE events come alone, travelers and residents alike. Events are held in public venues around Tokyo, and TIFE has been running them since 2015.
How much do TIFE events cost?
RSVP is free and there’s no membership fee. Each event lists its price up front: language exchanges are usually around ¥500 to ¥1,000, sports classes around ¥2,000 to ¥2,500, karaoke parties around ¥3,000, and day trips cost more.
Can I RSVP from outside Japan?
Yes. Meetup works from any country and doesn’t need a Japanese phone number. You can RSVP before your flight.
Can I buy from Mercari or Yahoo! Auctions as a tourist?
Usually not directly, because they need a Japanese address, phone number or payment method. TIFE’s Tokyo Buy For You service buys the item for you and delivers it to your hotel in Tokyo, or ships it worldwide with tracking. The service fee is US$15 per item for flea-market sites and US$10 per item for online stores, and you approve a full quote before paying.
Can I come with my partner or friends?
Of course. Couples and groups of friends join all the time. Just RSVP for each person so the host knows how many are coming.
